In a press conference held in Lahore, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Information Secretary Marriyum Aurangzeb asserted that political adversaries are foreseeing the return of Nawaz Sharif as the next prime minister after the scheduled February 8 elections. Emphasizing the need for a level playing field, she outlined the PML-N’s commitment to a manifesto focused on providing relief to the people.

“Beyond personal interests, our rivals can envision Nawaz Sharif becoming the next prime minister,” Marriyum Aurangzeb declared during the press conference. She commended the recent statement by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari, expressing optimism about transparent elections.

Zardari, in a statement, highlighted the country’s move toward transparent elections and expressed confidence in the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to ensure fair conduct during the upcoming polls.

Undeterred by opposition taunts, Marriyum Aurangzeb emphasized, “We are not worried by any words or taunts; we have to give relief to the people.” She recalled the launch of the PML-N’s political campaign on October 21, coinciding with the return of party supremo Nawaz Sharif.

Touching on Shehbaz Sharif’s recent acquittal in the Ashiana-i-Iqbal Housing Scheme reference, Marriyum highlighted the former prime minister’s loyalty to his brother and dismissed allegations of corruption.

In a broader context, the PML-N leader addressed historical issues, claiming that Imran Khan’s ascent to power in 2018 was facilitated by a deliberate failure of the result transmission system. She urged today’s youth to understand the political dynamics that unfolded during that period, emphasizing that a prolonged “game” was played with the opposition and the justice system.

As Pakistan approaches a critical juncture with the upcoming general elections on February 8, Marriyum Aurangzeb’s remarks on the political landscape coincide with allegations from the PPP and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) about a lack of a level playing field. The transparency and fairness of the elections have become focal points in the discourse, with both parties expressing concerns about potential obstacles to a fair electoral process.

The Supreme Court’s directive on November 3, ordering the government to ensure timely general elections within 90 days of the dissolution of the assemblies, adds a legal backdrop to the unfolding political narrative.
